Dr. Marano is a classically-trained pianist who earned his bachelor’s degree in Music from Brown University. His artistic background complements his rigorous medical training, having forged in him a strong sense of commitment to practice and excellence.

Dr. Marano completed medical training at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and graduated at the top of his class. An intensive six-year plastic and reconstructive surgery residency followed, through the Columbia / Cornell University program in New York City. Dr. Marano then pursued specialized training in Gender Surgery, becoming the first-ever Harvard University Complex Gender and Microsurgery Fellow, a program directed by Dr. Devin O'Brien-Coon.
Gender-Affirming Surgery in New York City
Dr. Marano is adept at performing all of the popular methods of FTM Top Surgery, from Keyhole to Double Incision. After learning about your surgery goals, he will recommend the best approach to meet your needs.
Dr. Marano is highly skilled at performing Metoidioplasty surgery. Choose from Simple Meta to Full Meta with Vaginectomy, Urethral Lengthening, Scrotoplasty and Testicular Implants. During your consultation, Dr. Marano will discuss with you the pros and cons of each method and how they relate to your surgery goals.
Dr. Marano is also trained in various methods of FTM Phalloplasty, such as RFF and ALT as well as MLD, Abdominal (with or without urethral lengthening) and groin flap Phalloplasty. If urethral lengthening is desired, he requires a Vaginectomy to reduce the risk of urinary complications.
With either Metoidioplasty or Phalloplasty, Dr. Marano uses rotated labial flaps ("VY Scrotoplasty") to create the scrotum. He offers both saline- or silicone-filled testicular implants. For erectile implants after Phalloplasty, Dr. Marano uses semi-rigid/malleable, 2-piece and 3-piece inflatable devices.
Dr. Marano’s team includes Reconstructive Urologist Dr. Karl Coutinho. In addition to assisting with primary surgeries, Dr. Coutinho also offers repair surgeries for urological complications.
Conveniently, Dr. Marano performs surgeries in both New York City and the greater Newark area. He operates at Lenox Hill Plastic Surgery Center in NYC, as well as Short Hills Surgery Center and North Fullerton Surgery Center in New Jersey.
Surgery Requirements
Dr. Marano is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and follows WPATH guidelines for surgery:
- You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals for genital procedures; one referral for other procedures unless otherwise specified by insurance.
- A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones for genital procedures, unless clinically contraindicated.
- Patients must be age 18 and over for Metoidioplasty and Phalloplasty.
Insurance Accepted
Dr. Marano accepts insurance from a wide number of insurance companies, as well as Medicaid (NJ, NY, out-of-state) and Medicare.
