Dr. Katherine Gast, MD is a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon who specializes in Gender Affirmation Surgery for transmasculine individuals. Dr. Gast is the Medical Director of the UW Health Comprehensive Gender Services Program in Madison, Wisconsin. She performs Top Surgery, Phalloplasty and Body Masculinization.
Dr. Gast received her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 2010 and completed her plastic surgery residency at U of MI in 2016. The following year, Dr. Gast completed the world-class Subspecialty Fellowship in Gender Affirming Surgery and Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction in Ghent, Belgium.
Dr. Gast specializes in Top and Bottom Surgery. She is experienced with a variety of Top Surgery methods, including Peri-Areolar, Circumareolar and Double Incision with free nipple grafts. Scar preferences, as well as chest size and anatomy, will help determine the best approach for your Top Surgery.
Dr. Gast also performs RFF and ALT Phalloplasty, as well as RFF/ALT combined or composite Phalloplasty. These procedures are done with a team that includes a urologist and gynecologist to remove the vagina (Vaginectomy) and create a scrotum from the labia majora (Scrotoplasty.) Implantation of scrotal implants or a penile implant can be done approximately a year after the initial Phalloplasty.
The UW Health Comprehensive Gender Services Program provides transgender, gender expansive and non-binary adults access to the highest quality gender-affirming medical care. With a multidisciplinary team of providers that includes physicians from Plastic Surgery as well as OB/GYN, Endocrinology and Urology, the program offers patients a "one stop shop" for medical transition.
Surgery Requirements
Dr. Gast is a member of WPATH and follows WPATH guidelines for surgery:
- You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals for Phalloplasty; one referral for Top Surgery unless otherwise specified by insurance.
- A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones for Phalloplasty, unless clinically contraindicated.
