what's up man
hey josh, I was trying to see if you can help me with this issue.
I am trying to get hysto but doctor has not found any reason to give me one; because you know she have to code it right for the insurance to see, Could you please tell me a diffa alternative? I know one of the trans guy said i can go overseas. Are they know some doctors that help trans with hysto?

Thanks for posting this, it's not an uncommon question. Firstly, the reason to give you a hysto is that you're trans and are requesting it. These surgeries are medically required, as statements like the AMA resolution 122 support.

How to code it for insurance is where it gets more complex... Most insurance policies will deny the coverage if the surgery is related to gender reassignment but if your identification documents have not been changed to M, then you could get it covered by insurance IF there are symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, recurring pain, etc. If there are no symptoms and coverage is denied, you can appeal, and it's possible to have a denial overturned. That's where my knowledge ends though, as I'm not a U.S. citizen.

As to alternatives, yes, there are many surgeons who could perform the surgery, both inside the U.S. and abroad, if you pay out of pocket. In the States, a hysterectomy runs anywhere from $9000 to $20,000 depending on the procedure. In places like Thailand and Serbia, you'd pay much less.

So, you basically have two choices at this point: try to get insurance to cover the surgery, or save up and pay privately to have it done.

I hope this helps!

You might also just try going to another dr. in your network who may be more well versed in trans insurance issues. Or perhaps put her in contact with another Dr. who is more experienced with navigating this stuff. I had lyrposcopic hysto (100% covered by Kaiser-AND when I had surgery my legal status had already been changed on my insurance documents to male). If you are on 'T' the Urology Assoc. actually recommends that FTMs get hysto- so there is a precedent and official position from a major medical body. I was in Cali at the time. For any additional questions, just msg. me. Google, there was a list of trans friendly doctors including those who perform hystos floating around- sorry but I don't have it anymore. It used to also include any insurance providers they were affiliated with. let me know if u have questions

I went to doctor Natalya Danilyants and she made sure my insurance covered the procedure. If you're around the Virginia or Maryland area (or are capable to travel) I strongly recommend her. She saved me over 10,000 dollars by getting my insurance to cover it and got me in for my appointment very quickly.

RE: Help - gen1392 - 11-16-2015

i didnt know if my insurance will cover hysterectomy so if it's not just gender dysphoria but painful periods so i have healthnet insurance and i was hoping it covers hysterectomy for painful periods.

RE: Help - Joshua - 11-16-2015

It sounds like you could get hysterectomy covered for medical reasons (gender dysphoria and/or pain.) Surgeons at UCSF accept Medi-cal so that may be a good place to get a referral to (they have Surgeons who do Top, Hysto and Phallo.)
