FTM Phalloplasty in San Francisco
Dr. Bauback Safa, MD is a highly experienced Microsurgeon and the Medical Director of the San Francisco Transgender Institute, a multi-disciplinary center that specializes in FTM Bottom Surgery. Since 2012, Dr. Safa and his team have performed more than 700 gender-affirming Phalloplasties—with no cases of complete flap loss—representing one of the largest experiences in the world.
As a world-renowned Reconstructive Microsurgeon, Dr. Safa has trained hundreds of surgeons around the world in microsurgery. He serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at both Stanford and UCSF divisions of plastic surgery and is on staff at the Buncke Clinic in San Francisco, where microsurgery was originally developed.
Dr. Safa is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM), the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and numerous other surgical societies.
Dr. Safa performs the following FTM Bottom Surgery procedures:
- Phalloplasty - Radial Forearm Flap (RFF) & Anterolateral Thigh (ALT)
- Glansplasty
- Mons Resection / Pubic Lift
Reconstructive Urologist Dr. Mang Chen works alongside Dr. Safa, performing the genitourinary aspects of Phalloplasty: Vaginectomy, Urethral Lengthening, and implantation of Testicular and Erectile Implants, as well as fistula and stricture repair surgeries. Dr. Safa operates at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and is also affiliated with Kaiser's San Francisco Medical Center.
Requirements for FTM Phalloplasty
Dr. Safa follows WPATH guidelines for surgery. You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals and a letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones (unless clinically contraindicated.) Because of hospital policy, patients must be 18 years of age or older to have Phalloplasty.
